Srinagar- The Srinagar district administration on Monday granted permission for the traditional 8th Muharram procession to be taken out on June 24 along its historic route from Guru Bazar to Dalgate, but imposed a strict timeline requiring mourners to complete the nearly three-kilometre main stretch in about two-and-a-half hours.
The permission was accorded by District Magistrate Srinagar in favour of the Yaadgari Hussaini Committee, Kalloo Manzil Mohalla, Guru Bazar, following recommendations from the Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar.
According to the official order, the procession will commence at 6:00 am from Guru Bazar, cross Jehangir Chowk by 7:00 am, and reach the J&K Bank Headquarters area on M.A. Road around 8:30 am. The administration directed organisers to ensure strict adherence to the approved route and schedule.
The procession will pass through Guru Bazar, Budshah Chowk and M.A. Road before culminating at Dalgate.
Authorities said one side of M.A. Road will remain reserved for the procession, while the other side will be kept open to facilitate emergency and essential services.
The order also bars the use of drones during the event and requires organisers to maintain close coordination with police, security agencies and civil authorities throughout the procession. They have additionally been directed to arrange first-aid facilities in consultation with the concerned departments.
Officials warned that no activity likely to disturb public order, communal harmony or the peaceful conduct of the procession would be tolerated.
“Any violation of the prescribed conditions shall attract legal action under relevant laws,” the order stated.
The administration has also stressed the need for full compliance with security and traffic regulations issued by the concerned authorities.
The annual 8th Muharram procession, one of the most significant events in Kashmir’s Shia calendar, draws thousands of mourners from across the Valley.
