Srinagar-Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was suspended from both sides near Dawal Bridge in Udhampur district on Monday evening after heavy rainfall caused slush and made the road unsafe for vehicular movement, officials said.
The highway has been reduced to a single carriageway at the Dawal slide point in Samroli area, where the road surface turned muddy and slippery following the rain, they said.
Teams from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), along with machinery and Traffic Police personnel, have been deployed at the site to clear the stretch and restore traffic, officials said.
Commuters have been advised against travelling on NH-44 until the road is cleared and declared safe for movement.
Authorities also urged people not to pay heed to rumours and advised commuters to check the latest road status through the Traffic Police’s official social media handles and Traffic Control Units.
