Srinagar- Ghazanfar Ali, former bureaucrat-turned-politician who served as Commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), passed away on Thursday night at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, after a prolonged illness.

According to family sources, Ali suffered a major heart attack on May 18, 2026, following which he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SMHS Hospital. He remained under treatment for some time and was later discharged after his condition improved.

However, his health deteriorated again on Thursday. Despite medical intervention, he breathed his last at around 10 pm at the hospital.

His death has left his family, relatives, friends and well-wishers in deep shock and grief. Condolences poured in from people across different sections of society, who expressed sorrow over his passing and solidarity with the bereaved family.

Gazanfar Ali had a long association with public administration and politics. He served as Commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and was known for his involvement in public affairs and engagement with different sections of society.

He later joined the Awami Itehad Party and unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections on the partyโ€™s ticket.

Following news of his demise, colleagues, acquaintances and political associates remembered him and conveyed condolences to his family during the difficult hour.
