The rain and cloud cover lowered temperatures across the city, giving residents respite from the heat and humidity. Srinagar had recorded a maximum of 32.5°C on September 3, according to the Meteorological Centre, while the minimum stood at 17.4°C.
The latest weather activity follows a period of above-normal temperatures in the Kashmir Valley. On August 29, Srinagar recorded 33.5°C, around 4.2°C above normal, amid largely dry conditions.
However, the recent spell should not be interpreted as the beginning of a prolonged wet phase. The India Meteorological Department’s latest forecast indicates cloudy weather with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers on September 5, followed by a return to mainly clear or partly cloudy conditions from September 6 onward.
The forecast suggests temperatures could gradually climb again through the coming week, with Srinagar’s daytime maximum expected to remain around 33°C from September 6 to 10.
The wider weather outlook also points to a relatively subdued rainfall pattern. The IMD has forecast below-normal rainfall nationally for September after August recorded a 16% rainfall deficit, with the agency expecting September precipitation to remain below 91% of the long-term average.
For Kashmir, the immediate forecast therefore points to temporary relief rather than a sustained reversal of the recent warmth. The rain has nevertheless offered a welcome break for residents after several days of oppressive afternoon temperatures.
The Meteorological Centre has also advised caution during periods of intense rainfall, as brief heavy spells can trigger flash floods, mudslides, and landslides at isolated locations, particularly in vulnerable mountainous areas.
