Srinagar – Celebrations erupted in various places across Kashmir after the US-Iran ceasefire announcement, with people calling it a “victory” for the Islamic Republic.
Hundreds of people, especially in the Shia-dominated areas of the valley, came out on the roads to celebrate the ceasefire.
The celebrations erupted in Saidakadal, Shalimar, Zadibal, Bemina and Lawaypora areas of the city here, as well as in Budgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Pulwama and Bandipora districts of the valley.
Waving Iranian flags, the people expressed joy over the ceasefire announcement and burst crackers to celebrate. People were seen distributing Kashmiri kehwa to passersby as part of the celebrations.
The people called the ceasefire a “victory” of Iran over the might of US and Israel.
“This ceasefire is a victory for Iran. They brought the US and Israel to their knees. Today, we are celebrating this victory,” a participant in Budgam said.
Earlier, large-scale fundraisers were held in Kashmir in solidarity with Iran. People of the valley donated money and other valuables to help the people of Iran.
Kashmir and Iran share deep-rooted cultural, linguistic, and religious ties, with Kashmir often called ‘Iran-e-Sagheer’ (little Iran).
Meanwhile, Valley’s chief priest, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, also hailed the ceasefire as a welcome step towards peace.
“The two-week ceasefire announcement between Iran and the United States is a welcome step toward peace. It underscores restraint and dialogue take precedence over confrontation for conflict resolution, and peace prevails over war,” he said, adding, “The resilience and courage shown by the Iranian people and leadership in the face of extreme aggression are commendable.”
In his reaction, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned the outcome of the Iran–United States ceasefire, asking what the US achieved after nearly 39 days of conflict.
Reacting to the development, Abdullah said the ceasefire allows reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which he noted was already “open and freely available” before the war began. “What exactly did this 39-day war achieve for the US?” he said in a post on X.
