Srinagar: Scientist Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), on Tuesday clarified his earlier remarks about earthquake vulnerability in Srinagar. He said claims that “99% of houses are unsafe” are incorrect and misrepresented.
Speaking at a two-day workshop titled “Drug Free Society: Call for Collective Action” at IUST Awantipora, Prof. Romshoo said his earlier statement was taken out of context and shared wrongly on social media. He added that the post was later removed.
He explained that Srinagar has around 2.5 lakh houses, and while many buildings may be vulnerable to earthquakes, this does not mean they are at immediate risk of collapse. “Vulnerability does not mean these houses will fall,” he said, stressing the need to understand the difference.
He also said there is no scientific way to predict exactly when, where, or how strong an earthquake will be, and warned people against making alarming or definite claims.
At the same time, Prof. Romshoo noted that Kashmir is an earthquake-prone region and this remains a serious concern. He called for better awareness and preparedness instead of fear.
“There is no need for sensationalism, but this is an important issue,” he said, urging people and authorities to focus on safety measures and community preparedness.
His clarification comes as discussions continue about building safety in Srinagar, with experts stressing the need for responsible communication and awareness rather than panic.
