Srinagar- Government and recognised private schools across Jammu and Kashmir will reopen on Monday after the administration decided against extending the summer vacation further, citing improving weather conditions.
Officials in the School Education Department said all educational institutions have been directed to resume normal academic activities from July 27. The decision was also confirmed by the office of Education Minister Sakina Itoo.
The schools had remained closed since July 6 after the government announced summer vacations due to an intense heatwave. The break was subsequently extended three times because of continued high temperatures, heavy rainfall, flash flood warnings and adverse weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) said the Class 11 Annual (Private) and Bi-Annual Examination 2026 will be conducted as per the notified date sheet on Monday.
In a statement, the Board said all arrangements had been put in place to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of the examinations. It added that revised dates for papers postponed earlier would be notified separately.
The reopening comes as weather conditions across the Union Territory have stabilised, with river levels showing a declining trend.
According to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department’s gauge update issued at 9 pm on Sunday, the River Jhelum was receding at all major monitoring stations. The water level at Sangam stood at 14.35 feet, Munshibagh at 17.04 feet and Asham at 12.43 feet, all showing a decreasing trend. Water levels at Pampore also declined, while Wular Lake remained stable.
Among the tributaries, Vishow Nallah at Khudwani, Rambiyara Nallah at Wachi, Doodhganga at Barzulla and Sindh Nallah at Doderhama were all flowing below flood declaration levels and continued to recede. No gauge reading was available for Lidder Nallah at Batkoot.
Weather forecasters have predicted largely stable conditions over the next week.
According to independent weatherman, Faizan Arif, most parts of Jammu and Kashmir are expected to witness predominantly dry weather on Monday, with only brief showers at isolated places. Similar conditions are likely on July 28 and 29, although parts of the Jammu region may receive early morning monsoon showers and isolated afternoon thundershowers.
Scattered rain is expected at some places on July 30, mainly over the Jammu region. Between July 31 and August 2, intermittent showers are likely across parts of the Union Territory, though continuous rainfall is not expected.
Despite the improving outlook, forecasters have warned that the risk of localised flash floods remains high due to the possibility of intense short-duration downpours. They said isolated cloudbursts cannot be ruled out and advised people to avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms.
The advisory also cautioned travellers about the possibility of landslides and shooting stones in vulnerable hilly areas, urging residents to remain alert even as the overall weather situation improves.
