Srinagar- Top officials of the Ministry of Higher Education and the National Testing Agency (NTA) will brief the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports on July 1 on the learnings from the NEET-UG re-examination and the government’s roadmap to strengthen the country’s premier testing agency.
According to sources, the committee will review the conduct of the NEET-UG re-examination held on June 21 after the original examination conducted on May 3 was cancelled following reports of a paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the alleged leak.
NTA Director General Abhishek Singh is expected to brief the panel on the outcome of the re-examination, while Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi has also been called for discussions.
Former ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan, who heads the high-powered steering committee constituted by the government to oversee implementation of reforms in the NTA, will present recommendations aimed at strengthening the examination body and improving the integrity of its testing processes.
The meeting will be the first under the chairmanship of Congress MP Mukul Wasnik, who recently took over as head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports following the retirement of senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh from the Rajya Sabha on June 21.
Besides reviewing the NEET examination process, the committee will also deliberate on the growing impact of artificial intelligence on education and its implications for student employability.
Sources said experts, including former National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) head Arun C. Mehta and former IIT Guwahati Director and ex-AICTE Chairman T.G. Sitharam, have been invited to brief members on how AI is reshaping higher education and suggest strategies to maximise employment opportunities for students.
Former officials from the Indian Institute of Science, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Delhi School of Artificial Intelligence are also expected to participate in the discussions.
The Parliamentary panel had earlier summoned senior officials from the ministries of Higher Education and Health, along with representatives of the NTA and the National Medical Commission (NMC), to examine issues related to the NEET-UG paper leak and the CBSE’s onscreen marking system.
