Ganderbal – At least 39 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims were injured after the bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and overturned near Gund in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district during the early hours of Tuesday, officials said.
An official said that the bus, bearing registration number AR11D-5655, was on its way to the Amarnath Cave Shrine when it met with the accident at the S-Mode stretch in Hariganiwan, leaving 31 passengers injured.
The bus fell on a house at Hariganwan after the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve. The house was badly damaged, but it prevented the bus from rolling into the Sindh river. No one was in the house at the time of the accident, the official said.
He said a rescue operation was launched by the CRPF, ITBP, Jammu and Kashmir Police and other agencies. All the injured pilgrims were shifted to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Kangan for treatment, from where they were later referred to SKIMS Soura for advanced treatment.
“The injured pilgrims are from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi,” the official said, adding that no loss of life was reported in the incident.
He said the 39 pilgrims, who were returning after paying obeisance at the cave shrine, suffered injuries. They were evacuated by locals and security personnel to the hospital for treatment.
Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha enquired about the condition of the injured.
“Spoke with Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal, and health officials and inquired about the health condition of Shri Amarnathji Yatra pilgrims injured in the unfortunate road accident earlier this morning at Ganiwan, Ganderbal. 39 pilgrims returning after Darshan of Baba Barfani sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at SKIMS,” Sinha posted on his X handle.
He said he has directed the health officials to ensure all necessary assistance and the best possible medical care for the injured.
