Srinagar- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the Union government’s Council of Ministers on Thursday to review the functioning of ministries, key policy decisions, their outcomes and future plans, official sources said.

The meeting, the first of the Council of Ministers this year, assumes significance amid speculation over a possible cabinet reshuffle.

All Cabinet ministers, Ministers of State with independent charge and other Ministers of State are expected to attend the meeting.

According to sources, the discussions will focus on the functioning of various ministries and departments, implementation of government schemes and programmes, and strategies to improve delivery and effectiveness.

The Prime Minister is also likely to address the ongoing West Asia crisis and its economic implications, and may issue directions to ministries and departments on mitigating its impact on citizens and key sectors.

Sectors such as energy, agriculture, fertilisers, aviation, shipping and logistics are expected to receive special attention during the meeting.

Soon after the West Asia conflict began, Modi had directed officials to take all possible measures to minimise difficulties faced by citizens and sectors affected by the crisis.

The meeting is also likely to deliberate on the government’s reform agenda and priorities for the coming years. Modi had earlier outlined reforms for the next decade, saying his government’s “Reform Express” had delivered systemic transformation and benefitted ordinary citizens.

The high-level meeting comes in the backdrop of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) strong performance in the recently held Assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam, and the return of an NDA government in Puducherry.

The Prime Minister has periodically convened meetings of the full Council of Ministers to discuss governance and policy matters, but Thursday’s meeting carries added political significance following the recent round of Assembly polls.
