Srinagar- Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh on Friday said that a third Vande Bharat Express train between Jammu and Srinagar will be launched soon, describing it as a major development for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a video message, Singh said the Ministry of Railways has also approved a halt at Udhampur following a longstanding demand from the public.
He said the approval was particularly significant as there had earlier been doubts over the feasibility of providing a stop at Udhampur. Singh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Railways and Railway Minister for approving the halt.
Reflecting on the expansion of railway connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Singh said that while Jammu got its railway station in 1972, it took nearly five decades for the network to make significant progress further into the region.
He said the expansion of railway infrastructure gathered momentum after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, with rail connectivity extended from Kathua to Udhampur and eventually to the Kashmir Valley.
Singh said connecting the Kashmir Valley by rail was once considered an extremely challenging task because of the difficult and mountainous terrain, but the project was ultimately completed despite formidable engineering and logistical challenges.
He also highlighted the construction of the Chenab Rail Bridge in Reasi—the world’s highest railway arch bridge—as a landmark engineering achievement.
The Union Minister said the Jammu-Srinagar rail journey has also emerged as a major attraction for tourists, with many visitors choosing to travel by train not only for connectivity but also to experience the scenic beauty along the route.
