Srinagar- Senior Shia cleric Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari on Thursday said the only recompense Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sought from the Muslim Ummah for conveying the message of Prophethood was love for his family, the Ahlul Bayt, while describing Muharram processions and Majalis as a means of paying tribute to Imam Hussain (AS) and propagating his message.
Addressing a gathering at Alamgari Bazaar during the traditional 9th Muharram Alam procession in Srinagar’s old city, Ansari recalled the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (AS) and the martyrs of Karbala and paid glowing tributes to them.
Quoting the Holy Prophet (PBUH), he said, “The Prophet did not ask for any worldly reward for conveying the message of Prophethood to mankind. Almighty Allah commanded him only to ask people to love his noble family, the Ahlul Bayt. Although people offered him many things, he sought only their love and devotion towards his Ahlul Bayt.”
He said the mourning processions and Majalis organised during Muharram were a way of paying homage to Imam Hussain (AS) and an effective means of carrying forward his mission.
“The mourning processions and Majalis are our tribute to Imam Hussain (AS) and a way to convey his message to generations,” he said.
Masroor Ansari thanked thousands of mourners for participating in the procession and maintaining discipline throughout the event.
He also expressed gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration for allowing the traditional Muharram processions over the past few years.
“I thank the LG administration for permitting these processions. For more than three decades, successive governments denied permission on one pretext or another. Different excuses were used to stop these traditional processions from being held,” he said.
Ansari said the peaceful conduct of the processions had disproved the apprehensions projected by previous governments.
“The mourners have debunked all the myths that these processions would become sectarian or create law and order problems. Those claims were merely propaganda used to blame the mourners and deny them their religious rights,” he said.
He added that Muharram processions in Kashmir embody communal harmony.
“Sunni Muslims, Kashmiri Pandits, Sikhs and people from other communities participate in these Muharram processions. They are peaceful and reflect the spirit of brotherhood and coexistence,” he said.
Earlier, the traditional Alam procession was taken out from Mandibal in Srinagar’s old city. Led by Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari, the procession passed through Alamgari Bazaar before culminating at Astana-e- Haji Syed Hassan, at Nabdipora in Hawal, with thousands of mourners participating.
