Srinagar- Police in Budgam on Wednesday arrested a man accused in a rape case dating back to 1987, nearly 39 years after he had been evading arrest.

The accused, identified as Bashir Ahmad Ganaie, originally a resident of Drer Kalipora in Shopian and presently living in Kulgam, was wanted in connection with FIR No. 237/1987 registered at Police Station Budgam under Sections 366 and 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code.

According to police, the accused had remained absconding since the registration of the case. Acting on specific inputs, a team from Police Station Budgam launched a well-coordinated operation and apprehended him.

โ€œIn a significant breakthrough, police apprehended a long-time absconder who had been evading arrest for nearly four decades,โ€ a police spokesperson said.

The arrest has brought renewed attention to the decades-old case, which had remained unresolved for years, raising concerns over delays in tracking and apprehending accused persons in long-pending cases.

Police said the accused is now in custody and further legal proceedings will be carried out in accordance with the law.

Section 366 of the Ranbir Penal Code pertains to kidnapping or abducting a woman to compel marriage or illicit intercourse, while Section 376 relates to the offence of rape.
