A three-day skill development workshop on translation in Indian languages—Kashmiri and Sanskrit—began at the University of Kashmir on Monday.

The workshop is being organised by the Department of Kashmiri in collaboration with the National Translation Mission and the Central Institute of Indian Languages. The programme has drawn participation from students, scholars, and faculty members across various departments of the university.

During the inaugural session, two books were also released, adding to the body of academic and literary work in regional languages.

Vice-Chancellor Nilofer Khan, who presided over the event, highlighted the vital role of translation in preserving linguistic heritage and promoting cultural exchange. She said the Department of Kashmiri has made significant contributions over the years and urged students and scholars to actively engage in translation work to make regional literature accessible to a wider audience. She also stressed the need for collaborative academic efforts to strengthen indigenous languages.

Dean Academic Affairs Shariefuddin Pirzada emphasised that languages represent the identity of a society and must be preserved. Registrar Naseer Iqbal remarked that it is time for academicians and society to introspect and work more rigorously for the protection and promotion of the Kashmiri language.

The workshop aims to enhance translation skills among participants while encouraging research, innovation, and greater engagement with Indian languages.
